What a way to wake up on a Sunday morning! My phone going off from multiple friends and news outlets that the Cubs have done what we have all been waiting for them to do and that is re-sign Cody Bellinger.
ESPN is reporting that Bellinger will make $30 million in 2024 and 2025 with $20 million 2026 so All in all it is $80 million for three years. The part of the deal I'm not crazy about is that Bellinger does have the option to opt out at the end of each year. So, if Cody has a great year and thinks he's worth more than 30 million in 2025 then he can opt out of his contract. However, if Cody doesn’t perform the Cubs are locked in for the full three years that's the part of the deal I'm not so crazy about.
While I would have liked to have seen this deal done a lot sooner it is however, better late than never. I think most fans would agree that we all wanted Cody back for 2024, so i'm glad that Jed and Ricketts were able to get the fans what they wanted. The big? Now is what do you do with the log jam that is now either behind him in center field or at first base. Can you convince some of these youngsters to stick with the organization because there is a future here or are you set up to use them as trade pieces should we need to make a trade deadline deal to remain competitive in the postseason. Only time will tell.
